The Orange soccer program completed its first sweep of the season against Westerville North. The series began on Monday with a 5-0 win by the JV B team, highlighted by a great penalty kick save by freshman goalie Ajay Tiwari, which secured the shutout victory. Later that day, the JV A team followed up with a decisive 6-1 win, controlling the game with a strong advantage in time of possession.
On Tuesday night, the Varsity team capped the sweep with a 1-0 victory. Despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities, it took a late second-half goal to secure the win. The goal was scored by sophomore Jude Osei, who finished a nice through ball from senior captain Tyler Colvert.
Both the JV A and Varsity teams are set to play at home on Thursday against St. Francis DeSales.
What an exciting night for the Orange Pioneers! The soccer season kicked off with a fantastic showing at Futbol Friday Night. The JVA team set the tone early, dominating their game against the Bishop Watterson Eagles with a decisive 6-1 victory. They scored the first six goals of the match, and while they conceded one late goal, the win was never in doubt.
The varsity game was a nail-biter, showcasing incredible skill and determination from both sides. Senior goalie Garret Comerford was a standout with several crucial saves, ensuring the Eagles couldn’t find the back of the net. The game was ultimately decided by a single goal from senior Michael Hines, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win for the Pioneers.
The atmosphere was electric, with a lively crowd that truly supported their team. The night wrapped up with a celebratory gathering at the bell, marking a great start to the season for the Orange Pioneers. Here’s to more thrilling matches ahead!
Varsity
On 8/26/23 the team faced Olentangy Berlin in the first of two rivalry games for the week. The game was very competitive and evenly played from start to finish. The game seemed to be in hand when Orange went up 3-1 in the second half. Berlin continued to press and push more players into the attacking side of the ball. As the second half progressed, Berlin was able to tie the game with a few minutes left. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.
On 8/29/23 the team took on Olentangy in the second rivalry game of the week. It was another tightly played game with both teams playing well. Drew Neville was able to score on a perfectly timed run from midfield which allowed him to score on a one-on-one with the Olentangy goalie. Olentangy was able to counter with two goals and came away with the 2-1 win.
On 9/5/23 the team traveled to Reynoldsburg to take on the Raiders. The team got off to a slow start in the first half which ended with neither team being able to create scoring opportunities. That changed early in the second half when Mikai Thiam drove a rebound half-volley into the lower left corner of the goal. The second Orange goal was scored by Ethan Kuhn who was able to deflect a Raider clearance which ended up in the back of the net. The third goal was scored by Drew Neville who played a great cross/shot (I'm sure Drew will say it was a shot) from the left corner of the 18-box that found the far post upper-90. The final goal was scored by Landon King on a header off a cross from outside. In the second half the Raiders were able to score two goals of their own but fell short with a final score of 4-2.
JVA and JVB
The JVA and JVB teams have continued their high level of play during the past couple weeks. During that time the JVA team was 3-0 and the JVB team was 2-1.

JVB - 9/11/23 @ Hilliard Davidson (5:30pm)
The varsity team played another hard fought contest against St. Francis DeSales on Thursday night. Both teams played well throughout the match with each having periods in which they controlled the pace of play. Orange was able to start the scoring in the middle of the first half when Mikai Thiam put a header in the net off of a throw in from Cameron Swallow. DeSales was able to answer a few minutes later which tied the game at 1-1. The teams went back and forth for several minutes with no scoring until Carson Cutler directed a header into the lower left corner off a corner kick. DeSales continued to put pressure on, looking to tie the game. Late in the game, a defensive give-away at mid-field allowed Landon King a break away which resulted in a one-on-one with the DeSales goalie. Landon was able to place his shot into the lower left corner of the goal to give Orange the win with a final final score of 3-1.

Varsity
Orange was able to pull out a 2-1 win last night at Westerville North. The team got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half and Westerville North took advantage by placing several scoring chances on net. Senior goalie, Alex Hertzfeld was up to the challenge and was able to make a number of solid saves to keep the team in the game. At the half, Orange was down 0-1 as Westerville North was able to capitalize on a rebound opportunity following an initial save on a hard driven shot. In the second half, Orange was able to pick up the intensity which resulted in more scoring chances and also limited the action in their own end. Orange was able to net two header goals (Landon King and Mikai Thiam) off long throw-ins from Carson Cutler which resulted in the win.
JVA
The JVA team had another impressive game and win with a final score of 7-1. Seven different Pioneer's scored during the game (Griffin Zavislak; Luka Agostinis; Ethan Weiser; Greg Rizo; Brayden Bursh; Spencer Arledge; Michael Hines). The defense was stout throughout the game giving up few opportunities to Westerville North who was able to score their only goal off a penalty kick in the second half.

The varsity team competed in two scrimmages this week. The first was against St. Francis DeSales on Thursday night which was called early in the second half due to rain and lightning. When the game was ended, Orange was leading on the scoreboard 2-0 following goals from Carson Cutler and Drew Neville. DeSales had breakaway opportunities in the first and second half but both were turned away with great saves by Garrett Comerford and Alex Hertzfeld. The second contest was Friday night against Centennial High School which ended with a commanding win in preparation for three non-league games (Westerville North, St. Francis DeSales, Olentangy Berlin) this coming week.
The JVA team also scrimmaged Centennial High School on Friday in which they won convincingly.
The JVB team scrimmaged Dublin Jerome on Thursday which was also shortened (halftime) due to rain. At the half, Orange was leading 2-0 after a solid performance on both sides of the ball.

The second scrimmage of the year is in the books with a 0-0 tie at Marysville. The defense gave up very few opportunities as Alex Hertzfeld and Garrett Comerford were able to keep a clean sheet in goal. Both defenses made it difficult for the opposing team. Orange did have a couple quality scoring chances that were just a bit off the mark. High pressure late in the second half created some opportunities but Orange was not able to find the back of the net.
The JVA squad had another solid outing posting a 3-0 win. The goals were scored by Luca Agostinis, Griffin Zavisilak, and Gavin Long. The defense and goalkeepers Ryan Hoang and Garrett Comerford recorded their second clean sheet of the season in as many games.
The next match is also the first official game of the season and is against Bishop Watterson at Olentangy Orange High School on Friday August 11th (JVA @ 5:30pm, Varsity @ 7:15pm).
It was a solid first outing for the OOBS Varsity team as they were able to close out a 3-1 win against a talented Delaware Hayes squad. After giving up a early first half goal, the team settled in and netted two goals prior to the first half ending. Drew Neville tapped in the first goal and Makai Thiam had a great header that found the net off of a long throw in from Cameron Swallow. In the second half, Carter Musgrove tracked a cross from out wide and finished with another great header at the far post.
The JVA squad also had a solid outing posting a 7-0 win. They were led by Griffin Zavisilak who netted four goals. Greg Rizo, Michael Hines and Jude Osei finished off the scoring for the Pioneers. The defense and goalkeeper Ryan Hoang got their first clean sheet of the season.
The next match is a scrimmage against Marysville High School (away) on Tuesday August 8th (JVA @ 5:30pm, Varsity @ 7:15pm).

The annual “Luke’s Game” that the Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) soccer team plays each year is an extremely important and special event to the Orange Soccer program. The game is named after Orange Soccer alumnus, Luke Gabbert (‘15), who tragically passed away in February of 2016. Luke was an incredible player, leader, mentor, friend, and brother to many that have been a part of this program. He perfectly exemplified hard work and doing whatever he had to do to become a better player, ultimately earning All-State honors his senior year.
There was no better teammate than Luke; he was always looking for ways to love and encourage others as well as bring the team closer together. While he will always be remembered as an Orange Soccer legend, he is also deeply missed by the OWU soccer family as well. Luke played his freshmen year at OWU and quickly became a starter and extremely valuable player for one of the top DIII teams in the nation. Each year since his passing OWU has chosen one of their regular season games to be “Luke’s Game.” This year, the September 6th game against Wheaton will be Luke's Game. See the link for more details.
While younger players in the program never knew Luke, he remains in the hearts and thoughts of the coaching staff and senior class, and we still believe that there is infinite value in continually celebrating and sharing his life with others, as he was the best example of a player, leader, friend, and person.
Directions to OWU from the south (US 23): Delaware is approximately 15 miles north of Interstate 270 on US 23 (High Street in Columbus). Exit US 23 at the William Street exit.
